Symptoms That You Used the Wrong Formula

TL;DR: A wrong formula often announces itself with a factor of two, a sign that cannot exist, units that do not cancel, or an answer that perfectly matches a neighboring problem. Rebuild the relation in words. Do not keep retyping the same numbers into the same page.

Off by two, by four, or by pi

Certain factors are signatures. Twice or half the area of a triangle usually means the “divide by two” was applied twice or not at all. Four times a circle’s area usually means diameter stood in for radius, because the square of two is four. A missing or extra pi means a circumference formula and an area formula were swapped, or a sector was treated as a full circle. A result that is 100 or 1,000 times off is more often a unit or a percent-versus-decimal problem than a subtle modeling choice.

On Calculation Assistant, the area and finance pages sit near cousins that share vocabulary. Triangle versus trapezium, simple interest versus compound interest, monthly payment versus amortization row. If your result is exactly the answer to a different standard question, you may have solved that other question correctly. Check the page title against the sentence you wrote at the top of the homework. “I found the slant height” is not a defense when the question asked for volume.

Signs that the world will not allow

Some quantities can be negative and some cannot. A length, an area, a volume, a resistance, or a time duration that comes back negative means a subtraction was reversed or a signed convention was ignored. A temperature in kelvin that is negative means a Celsius input was treated as absolute. A probability or a percentage of a whole above 100 percent, when the question is a part of a single whole, means the numerator and denominator were swapped.

Money has signed conventions that students trip over. A payoff calculator may show a remaining balance as positive while a cash-flow page shows the same payment as negative because it is money leaving you. Read the label. Do not “fix” a sign by multiplying by minus one until you can say which direction the page uses. Flipping the sign to match an answer key hides a misunderstanding that will reverse the next problem, the one where the cash flows the other way.

Units that refuse to cancel

Write the unit beside every term in the formula, not only beside the answer. Meters times meters give square meters. Meters times square meters give cubic meters. If you are computing an area and the units you wrote multiply to meters, the formula you used is not an area formula, no matter how official the page looked. This check takes less time than a second numerical attempt and it does not require the original measurements to be simple.

Rates must cancel too. Distance over time is speed. A page that divides time by distance will produce a number with the reciprocal unit. If you cannot name that unit, you do not have a speed, even if the digits look familiar. Engineering pages that mix inches and meters fail this test as soon as you write both units down. The page will still multiply the bare numbers.

The answer that belongs to the next exercise

Worksheets are written in pairs: radius then diameter, interest then principal, series then parallel resistance. A very common “bug” is computing exercise 4 with exercise 5’s method because the diagrams look alike. If your result matches the printed key for the other item, celebrate your arithmetic and then move it to the correct line. The fix is to re-read the asked quantity, not to add a fudge factor.

Parallel resistors are the classroom version of this. The parallel combination is smaller than the smallest branch, not the sum. If your result is larger than every resistor in the group, you used the series formula. The page you wanted is the parallel one, and the series page did exactly what its title said. The symptom is the inequality, and you can see it before you look anything up.

Rebuild the formula in a sentence

  • Say the output — “I want the area of this triangle.”
  • Say the inputs you truly have — “base and perpendicular height, both in centimeters.”
  • Say the relation — “half of base times height.”
  • Compare with the page — if the page’s relation differs, you are on the wrong page or you have misremembered the identity.
  • Only then retype numbers. Retyping without a new sentence repeats the error faster.

If you cannot say the relation, you are not ready to debug digits. Look up the definition in the notes, or read the formula the page prints, and decide whether that printed formula is the one the question named. A printed formula can be correct and still be the wrong tool for the sentence you were asked.

When the symptom is subtle

Not every wrong formula is off by a clean factor. A beam model that ignores a support, or a gas law that holds pressure constant when both pressure and temperature changed, can land in a plausible range. The check then is whether each assumption in the formula is true in the problem. List the assumptions in the margin. Cross out the ones the prompt violated. If any assumption is crossed out, the page is a different scenario. Find the scenario that matches, or do the derivation you were actually given.

Use the Calculation Assistant homepage to switch pages once the sentence test fails. Staying on a page because the form is already filled in is how a wrong method becomes a polished one.
