Name the file with the date and the job. A cropped picture of a lone number cannot be checked later and should not be the only record.

What has to be inside the frame

People capture the result line because that is the part they came for. Three weeks later the picture shows 14.62 and nothing else. Nobody can tell whether that was meters, square meters, or a monthly payment. A usable capture includes the browser’s page title or the on-page heading, the filled inputs, the unit text next to those inputs, and the result. If the formula is printed above the form, include it. That formula is how a second person knows which definition you used.

On Calculation Assistant, many tools stack the diagram, the formula, the fields, and the result vertically. One screen may not hold all of them on a laptop, and it almost never will on a phone. Take two captures rather than one heroic crop: one of the inputs, one of the result, with the heading visible in both so they can be paired. A single scrolling screenshot is better when the browser can produce it.

Filenames that still make sense in June

IMG_2044 and Screenshot 2026-10-08 at 09.12.03 describe the camera, not the work. Rename immediately, while you remember. A practical pattern is date, project, page, and one key input: 2026-10-08_slab-north_concrete-volume_12m-x-8m-x-0.15m.png. You can search for “slab-north” later. You cannot search a gallery of blue-gray form widgets by memory.

Keep units in the filename when two versions exist. A file ending in _mm and a file ending in _inch will save you from emailing the wrong one. If you rerun the same page after a design change, do not overwrite the first capture. Add a revision token, r2, or keep both dates. The difference between the two pictures is often the only history of why the number changed.

Crops that quietly delete the evidence

Cropping to “make it clean” is how the unit label and the page name disappear. It is also how a warning line under the form gets cut. If the page told you that angles are in degrees, or that the rate is annual, that sentence is part of the result. Leave it in. Decorative cropping belongs on marketing images, not on calculation records.

Watch the edges for half a digit. A result of 1,250 cropped to 250, or a scientific-notation exponent cut off so that 3.2e4 becomes 3.2, is worse than no picture. Zoom to 100 percent before you capture, especially on a high-density display where the browser is scaled. If a digit touches the edge of the frame, retake the shot. Do not trust yourself to remember the missing piece.

A picture is not the calculation

Screenshots are easy to edit and easy to misread. They do not store the expression in a form another tool can recompute. For anything you may need to audit, also keep a text line: page name, inputs, result, unit. The picture supports the text. The text survives when the image is compressed by a chat app until the digits blur.

Chat apps are a special hazard. They recompress images and sometimes show a preview that looks sharp on the phone that sent it and soft on the laptop that receives it. If a colleague must rely on the figure, send the renamed file as a file, or paste the text line above the image. “See attached” plus a mushy preview is how 18.6 becomes 16.8 in a meeting.

When a table beats a picture

Amortization schedules, concrete estimates with several pours, and any comparison of two loan offers get clumsy as screenshots. A short table in your notes, copied from the result, is easier to diff. Capture the screenshot as a backup that the table was transcribed faithfully, particularly the first row and the last row. Transcribing a 360-row mortgage by hand is unnecessary. Transcribing the inputs, the payment, the first interest amount, and the final balance is enough to prove which schedule you meant.

Keep the heading, the inputs, the units, and the result.

Name the file with date, job, and the distinguishing input.

Do not crop away formula notes or exponent digits.

Write the same facts as text beside the image.

Do not overwrite an earlier run when the design changes.

Privacy in the frame

A calculator page can still show a tab bar, an email notification, or a filename from another client. Capture the page region, not the whole desktop, when the desktop has unrelated work. Loan amounts, addresses, and site dimensions may be sensitive even though the tool itself did not ask you to log in. Treat the screenshot with the same care as the spreadsheet it came from.

When you need the page again, reopen it from the Calculation Assistant homepage and confirm the title matches the one frozen in the filename. A fresh visit that only “looks similar” is a different record. The screenshot you saved is the authority for what you computed that day.

Capture the title, inputs, units, and result.
